MASTERS SWIMMING.
AGE IS NO BARRIER !
The 1st Singapore Masters Swimming Championship 2007 was held at the Farrer Park Aquatic Centre on Saturday and Sunday 30 June-1 July 2007. The Singapore Masters staged only 7 weeks prior to the flagship masters swimming event of the year, the Standard Chartered International Masters 2007, was a relatively low key event and run over 2 half day sessions. The event attracted a total of 302 participants ages ranging from 19 to 86.
Our community of masters swimming enthusiasts is growing locally, regionally and internationally. The event attracted new participants who wanted to try out masters swimming, swimmers who were competitive in their youth who were keen to get back into the pool and also our growing pool of regular supporters from previous meets.
This meet also saw a team of young masters swimmers from Ngee Ann Polytechnic take part in their fist masters swim meet. We hope to encourage more swim teams from tertiary education organizations to participate in masters swimming and thereby foster interest in masters swimming from a young age.
Organisers also used the occasion to provide greater awareness for Special Olympics Singapore. We invited Special Olympics to set up a food stall to provide food for the participants and at the same time raise funds for their organisation. Various teams including the Darwin Stingers, Tanglin Club, Hollandse Club, APSC and Dunkin Donuts also did an ad hoc collection amongst team members to donate to the Special Olympic cause, raising over $1,000.00 for the organization.
